Tourism on the rise
Despite the sluggish economic growth, tourism augurs well for many countries, especially in the Asia-Pacific region. The UN World Tourism Organisation in its report for 2013 said that number of international travellers increased by 5 percent touching 1.09 billion which was beyond expectation, and 2014 can look forward to further surge.
International tourist arrival in Asia Pacific region has shown ten percent growth with the arrival of tourists showing 6 percent growth over last year to 248 million.
Though the tourist arrival to Chandigarh had plateued at one juncture for last several years, the expectations are high with a large number of interesting cultural and literary activities happening in the city, which are garnering space on the online media generating interest amongst visitors.
With better connectivity to the city with a four-laned highway from Delhi (though there are a few stretches still being widened), fast trains, and nearly 12 flights daily landing in the city, the inflow is expected to increase.
Chandigarh is Best City for Planned Habitat for Urban Poor
President of India Mr Pranab Mukherjee presented the award to the Governor of Punjab and Administrator of UT Chandigarh, Mr. Shivraj Patil. The award was given for preparing the city for Slum Free City Plan of Action and pilot projects under Rajiv Awas Yojana. The award recognises city's initiative to take care of its poor.
